糊涂当初接手这餐馆的时候，也曾是雄心壮志要大干一番。
之前糊涂曾在一家湖南餐馆做业余维特，那餐馆生意十分红火，老板是出了名的暴脾气，不忙时和和气气，谈笑风生，忙起来对待维特胃垂丝疾言厉色，炒勺都直接从灶台上扔出来过，被气跑的中国留学生数不胜数。
老板夫妻俩来自台湾，都是台大的高材生，来美国读研究生遭遇磨难，一气之下，老板跑去底特律，出价一万元，专门要学一家著名餐馆大师傅的手艺。学成后开了餐馆，竟然赚得钱都数不过来。听了糊涂的学校遭遇，老板竟然对我格外高看一眼，时不时的把手艺教了一些。后来遇到在其他城市开饭店的机会，我才和这湖南餐馆的老板分手告别。
糊涂餐馆的生意，只能算是平顺。我站在灶台里一天到晚抡开了炒勺的时候，在终于体会到湖南餐馆老板的辛苦和心中郁闷。不到两年下来，再也受不了顾客的各种奇怪要求、以及进货备菜的烦恼、伺应生们的糊涂、卫生局的检查、报税的繁杂等等，一年到头，竟是看不见阳光和白天。
于是，糊涂决定卖掉餐馆，去给别人打工。就这样，家在中国北方城市的糊涂和家在中国福州农村的马一以及老马一家，在美国相识了。
